The journey from page to screen is a well-trodden path, and these four authors created novels so compelling they were destined for cinematic greatness. In the 1990s, two writers in particular dominated the thriller genre. John Grisham, a master of the legal thriller, saw his 1991 novel The Firm become a blockbuster film starring Tom Cruise. Similarly, Michael Crichton's blend of science and suspense in Jurassic Park was brought to life by Steven Spielberg in 1993, launching one of the most successful film franchises of all time.

The other two authors penned profoundly influential, though very different, literary works. Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1982 novel The Color Purple, a powerful story about the lives of African American women in the rural South. It was first adapted into a celebrated film by Steven Spielberg in 1985 and again as a movie musical in 2023. Anthony Burgess's dystopian 1962 novella, A Clockwork Orange, explored themes of free will and violence through its unique "Nadsat" slang. The book gained widespread, and controversial, fame through Stanley Kubrick's iconic 1971 film adaptation.
