In soccer football and in hockey: what is the meaning of the term "hat trick"?

sports

In both the fast-paced world of ice hockey (Deals) and the global game of soccer, a player achieves this celebrated feat by scoring three times in a single match. It is a rare and impressive display of offensive skill that often turns the tide of the game and cements a player's standout performance for that day. While other sports use the term for various threefold accomplishments, in hockey and soccer, it specifically refers to this goal-scoring milestone.

Interestingly, the term didn't originate on the ice or the pitch, but on a cricket field. In 1858, English cricketer H.H. Stephenson took three wickets with three consecutive balls. As was customary for an outstanding performance, a collection was taken up for him, and the proceeds were used to present him with a hat. The name "hat trick" stuck and was eventually adopted by other sports to describe a significant accomplishment of three.

The tradition has evolved uniquely in each sport. In hockey, a hat trick famously results in fans showering the ice with their own hats, which are then collected, often for charity. In soccer, the goal-scorer is traditionally allowed to keep the official match ball as a personal memento of their achievement.
