The spiritual home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia, a place deeply intertwined with his family's history. His grandfather served as its minister, and his father, Martin Luther King, Sr., also led the congregation. Dr. King himself was baptized and ordained at Ebenezer. In 1960, he became co-pastor alongside his father, a position he held until his death. The church was not just a place of worship; it was a central organizing point during the Civil Rights Movement, earning it the name "America's freedom church".
Dr. King's life was tragically cut short on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was in the city to support African American sanitation workers who were striking for better wages and safer working conditions. He was shot and killed while standing on the second-floor balcony of the Lorraine Motel. Following his assassination, his funeral was held at his home church, Ebenezer Baptist, on April 9, 1968. The Lorraine Motel is now the site of the National Civil Rights Museum.
