COVENTRY / TAX PROTEST: TO PERSUADE HER HUSBAND, LEOFRIC, EARL OF MERCIA, TO LOWER THE HEAVY TAXES - BASICALLY AS THE RESULT OF A DARE — history

The legend of Lady Godiva's daring ride through Coventry is a classic tale of protest against unjust taxation. According to the story, which dates back to at least the 13th century, Lady Godiva was a noblewoman in the 11th century married to Leofric, the Earl of Mercia. She was troubled by the severe taxes her husband imposed on the citizens of Coventry and repeatedly pleaded with him to reduce them. Weary of her requests, Leofric declared he would grant her wish only if she rode naked on horseback through the town's market square.

Taking him at his word, Lady Godiva issued a proclamation for all townspeople to remain indoors with their windows shut. She then rode through Coventry, clothed only in her long hair, to fulfill her husband's challenge. Following her courageous act, a stunned Leofric kept his promise and lowered the oppressive taxes. Later versions of the legend include the character of "Peeping Tom," a tailor who disobeyed the order and was struck blind for spying on her.

While Lady Godiva was a real historical figure known for her generosity, most historians believe the story of her naked ride is a legend that emerged about a century after her death. The tale has nonetheless become a powerful symbol of civic identity for Coventry and an enduring story of a noblewoman's sacrifice to stand up for the common people against unfair financial burdens.
